10 Game Mechanics They DESPERATELY Wanted You To Love (But You Didn’t)

9. The Hunger Mechanic - Shenmue III

Ah, Shenmue III = a game more disappointing than a birthday party without a cake. This long-awaited sequel is so full of bad gameplay and terrible design choices that playing it often feels like pulling your teeth out. There's no better example of this than the dreaded hunger mechanic.

Shenmue III introduces a hunger meter to the series that requires you to consume food to keep it full, costing you movement speed if it gets depleted. However, as if that wasn't already frustrating enough, this also acts as your health bar.

That's right, your health is entirely tied to your hunger, meaning it's always slowly depleting. As such, you need to stock up on as much food as possible lest you be woefully underprepared for every fight.

You can tell that the game's director, Yu Suzuki, wanted to bring an element of realism and role-play into this game, but players hated this mechanic as you had to grind and shop to have decent health. It was nothing but a chore.
