When adding a new mechanic to a much-beloved franchise, you'd better be certain it will work. As such, you'd think Nintendo would have thought twice about introducing a frustrating, unpredictable, and, at times, game-breaking RNG mechanic to the legendary Smash Bros. series. You'd think that, yet it happened, enter Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Picture the scene - you're whopping your friend's butt in a brawl when, all of a sudden, your character trips up. Suddenly, your friend, who was just a punching bag before, gets the drop on you and turns the tides of the battle, all because of a random chance mechanic. Doesn't that just suck?

This was the case for many when playing this iteration of the iconic mascot fighter. The tripping mechanic, which introduced a small probability for characters to trip, was a much-maligned addition that frustrated casual players and killed the game's presence in the competitive scene.

You can see why Nintendo thought this would have been fun, helping to close skill gaps and add some chance to the game, but, oh boy, it was a fumble by every stretch of the imagination.
