10 Gameplay Tweaks That Seriously Improve Video Games
5. A Unique Way To Allocate Perk Points - Fallout 4
Love it or hate it, one thing that we can just about all probably agree on was that Fallout 4 was way too streamlined. Between the threadbare dialog options and replacing stat-based skills with a buffet menu of perks, Bethesda succeeded at removing just about all the role-playing from what is supposed to be an RPG.
Fortunately, with a little creativity on your part, you can get more out of this system than intended - you just need a little discipline.
Instead of simply upgrading perk points however you want, try upgrading them based on what you're actually doing. Did picking that lock trigger a level up? Then that point goes to lock picking. Did you gain a level after killing an enemy with a melee attack even though you're playing a gunslinger? Too bad, put that point into melee.
When it comes to the more unspecified skills, put a point into its governing S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stat.
This can lead you down an unexpected path, building a type of character you've never played before and didn't plan on. You'll also be forced to ignore some kills entirely, increasing the challenge. Bonus point for playing this way on survival mode.
