10 Games That Prove Developers Are Getting Lazy

7. Thief

The original Eidos Interactive Thief was just that: original. Achieving Metacritic Universal Acclaim for both Critic and User scores, this breakaway from gaming norms saw the charismatic protagonist relying on silent and surreptitious movement over gung-ho gun-play and introduced a new genre, the Sneak-'em-up. The concept remains strong; having to think, analyse surroundings for shadows, be mindful of where your footsteps may give you away, having to skirt danger rather than meet it head on, should all make for a tense, immersive, heart palpating adventure. Except it doesn't. Combat upgrades will make the player treat stealth as a matter of choice rather than necessity, immersion is shattered by endlessly repeated dialogue, the virtually empty city streets are populated by even emptier NPCs with endlessly repeated dialogue. (See how annoying it is?) Garrett has developed a Jackdaw Mentality, his furtive manoeuvring through locked windows and clever disentangling of traps to steal a frikkin spoon will make this game feel more of a Chav-Sim than playing a master thief. All that's missing is the ability to spray 'Gaz Woz Here' on the walls and leave a smelly parcel on the living room carpet.
