10 Games That Punish You For Ignoring The Story

The old point-and-click Sierra games are infamous for softlocking the player with the most obscure kinds of things.

The most egregious example of this might be the bridge from King's Quest 2: Romancing the Stones, although at the same time, it is something that can be avoided if you just follow the story.

In the game, there is an old, decrepit bridge that breaks a little every time the player crosses it.

The animation that plays is an obvious indicator that the bridge is bound to collapse eventually and that you should avoid crossing it unless absolutely necessary.

Still, if you ignore these hints and aimlessly wander around the map, the bridge will collapse after the eighth crossing, permanently preventing you from finishing the game.

Moreover, the number of times you can cross the bridge is just enough to let you complete all of the main objectives on both sides, so you really need to pay attention to the story and do everything correctly, or else you have to start all over again.

It's a really bad punishment, but then again, that is what made these games so special back in the day.
