3. Guitar Hero/Rock Band/Singstar
What People Will Say: Buy a real guitar and learn the songs for real! I'm a victim of this. I
love the Guitar Hero and Rock Band games; I own a load of them along with far too many peripherals that I never use anymore, but during my days as a carefree student, they were great fun at parties. Again, though, I'm selective about who I talk to about these games; some of my musician friends absolutely
loathe the games, and given that I've owned a guitar for years that I'm just not very good at, I tend to keep it on the down-low that I can complete every song on the Expert setting no problem. It's a fair point - if you're dexterous enough to play these games well, why not abandon them and actually start playing for real? Though the rhythm game craze was great about 5 years ago, it's well and truly had its day now, as explained by the poor sales figures of recent titles, and the flat-out cancellation of the Guitar Hero series. Playing a plastic guitar isn't seen as cool anymore - it's just embarrassing (again, thank you, South Park!)
