7. Ezio Auditore da Firenze - Assassin's Creed
UbisoftPerhaps a more pertinent example of ludonarrative whatever, Ezio is a classic example of a two-faced game hero, charming and benevolent in the context of the story, and a cold-blooded killer in gameplay. To be fair, he is an assassin. That doesn't make it any less weird that's willing to carve a path through any guard and Templar that stands in his way without the slightest hint of resignation of remorse. His assassination targets we understand. It's just what he does. That doesn't forgive his stab-happy misadventures outside his Assassin agenda however. Again, killing people is his job. But does he ever stop to consider that its a guards job to guard? He has all sorts of tricks up his sleeve, but that doesn't matter to Ezio. Instead of just knocking them out or evading them like a true assassin should, he will cut a bloody swath to his target, who also gets the stabbing treatment. Stabbing things in the neck is Ezio's solution to everything. Guards chasing him? Stab. Some guy in armour standing in the way of his target, just doing his job? He gets stabbed too. It just doesn't matter to Ezio. What really makes this messed up is how he goes back to being a charming Italian ladies man off the job. It must be nice being able to come home to a woman after a long days work. You know who can't do that? Those guards you stabbed in the neck. All 800 of them.
