8. Grand Theft Auto Series - Just About Everything

Everyone knows this series of open-world action-crime mayhem. If the main story itself isn't enough, you're always able to go amiss killing and robbing people at your leisure. Stick up stores, steal cars, kill everything. Gather a bunch of vehicles and create a large explosion, do drive-bys from a golf cart, steal cars with a passenger and launch your vehicle off ramps after leaping out. The pedestrians are quite chatty too, often reacting towards you with various little quips. It really lends your actions some extra texture. That and their panicked screaming layering the soundscape of your destruction. The moment of recognition comes every once in a while, when just for a second, the game pulls off a bit of sickening realism. A cop's body reacts to a barrage of bullets just a bit too well, or when your baseball bat connects with that old lady's face in a way that's just too real for a few frames. You feel kind of odd, like things just got real heavy. But then her body flops onto the road, gets run over by a startled driver, who runs over a cop instigating a shootout. You're then pulled back in and your sense of morality disperses like the blunt smoke from the window of that gangster's Buccaneer you're about to steal.
