3. "In Water" Ending - Silent Hill 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vA6rAU5DAoo Moving from beautifully wrenching endings to one that's just not fair, this rather difficult-to-attain ending to Silent Hill 2 is the emotional equivalent of a sledgehammer in the gonads, making a considerable effort to put the player in as much emotional pain as possible. Silent Hill 2 is a mature game that deals with difficult issues, and none other than the true problems haunting James in this ending, which is among the most nihilistic and soul-destroyingly bleak ever put into a video game ever. It turns out that Silent Hill is basically an allegory of James' own mental breakdown which occurred due to him killing his own ill wife, at once to spare her the pain and presumably himself, too. But it gets worse; James then drives into the Silent Hill lake, killing himself where they used to vacation as a couple so that he can be reunited with her in the afterlife. Though the afterlife thing might provide some hope - within the context of the game's universe, regardless of your own religious views - it's still a massive, massive downer, and I felt like absolute crap afterwards.
