While we're on the topics of 'getting non-gamers involved' and 'trodding on bits of plastic', let's talk about Guitar Hero. Although the first game was released near the end of 2005, it was 2007 that saw the series go stratospheric with Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.

The first in the series on PS3 and the Wii, literally everyone had a copy. GHIII didn't add much in terms of gameplay, but it had Slash from Guns 'N Roses.

Meanwhile, the setlist was beefed up with a host of iconic songs: School's Out, Paint It Black, Welcome to the Jungle... Need I go on?

But one song eclipsed them all: Dragonforce's Through the Fire and Flames. This (probably cocaine-fuelled) song took power metal, shoved a rocket up its backside and went wailing around the cosmos for the best part of ten minutes. People took to YouTube in droves to show off how good they were at it, so you could say GHIII was partly responsible for the rise of Pewdiepie...

Bonus fact: According to Wikipedia, Guitar Hero III was the biggest selling game of 2007, and the first title to rake in over a billion dollars. Ever.
