Though he is quite firmly the antagonist of the first half of Bioshock, Andrew Ryan cannot go un-admired. The free-thinking visionary built Rapture in the deep depths of the Atlantic Ocean where "the artist would not fear the censor, where the scientist would not be bound by petty morality where the great would not be constrained by the small. Not only was it a marvellous feat in its own right, but the prioritisation of creativity promoted by Ryan is something to be lauded. He is very much the sort of villain who would have had a spot in his heart for video games and that instantly wins him favour with us. His construction of the sprawling, submarine metropolis may be an insane display of hubris and ingenuity, but Andrew Ryan is still a ruthless person who directly and indirectly is responsible for the deaths of many of Raptures once-thriving populace. However, the crimes of Andrew Ryan pale in comparison to those of his long-time rival Frank Fontaine. This fact and Ryans mould-breaking spirit make it hard not to feel sympathetic towards him so it is all the more depressing when he is unceremoniously beaten to death with a golf club.
