10 Gaming's Biggest Issues Everyone Is Ignoring

6. Poor Console Optimisation

After both Sony and Microsoft marketed their new consoles on an impressive amount of power under the hood, players began to expect that modern games would reflect the horsepower these machines are seemingly capable of.

However, video game development isn’t as straightforward as this, and we've had it demonstrated many times in recent years.

While implementing ray tracing alongside various other graphical bells and whistles can make for some tremendously eye-catching games, the reality is that getting them to run at higher framerates in this state is a tremendous task.

Although there are some games that have reached this coveted performance benchmark, developers are more likely to circumvent this problem by including Quality and Performance modes instead, with the former emphasising resolution at the cost of 30fps, and the latter sacrificing graphical fidelity for higher frame rates.

The problem is that neither of these modes tend to be particularly well optimised, especially on launch. As visually striking as Jedi: Survivor looks, for example, running the game above 30fps has proven a step too far.

Constant frame drops in the performance mode ruined the experience of an otherwise exceptional game, demonstrating that developers pushing for fidelity and frame rates isn't how to make games better.

The less said about the long-awaited Redfall too, the better.
