10 Garbage Games Everybody Bought Anyway

6. Wii Play

Shadow the Hedgehog
Nintendo

Anyone with a pair of eyes could see the Wii didn't have the graphical or computational power of its competitors.

Despite this drawback, the Nintendo system was astoundingly profitable, due to its revolutionary motion controls. The system's launch title, Wii Sports, was regularly used to advertise the technology's mechanics, accessibility, and precision. Wii Sports was so well-received, it became the Wii's #1 best-seller.

Since Wii Play was released around the same time and had similar gameplay, Wii owners flocked to purchase it, assuming they'd have the same experience.

Oh, how wrong they were. Wii Play had potential since it contained nine mini-games, including laser hockey, billiards, fishing, and a Duck Hunt-inspired shooting range. Unfortunately, each mini-game was let down by bland gameplay. Due to the lack of variety, players had little incentive to revisit this underwhelming collection after a single playthrough.

Having said all that, Wii Play was still an absolute triumph. Not only was it released around Christmas, it was packaged with a free Wii Remote. Who could say no to that?

Wii Play ultimately went on to sell 28 million copies, outperforming Nintendo's biggest heavy-hitters, including both Mario Galaxies, both Legend of Zeldas, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
