10 Genius Fourth Wall Breaks In 2016 Video Games
1. Battlefield 1 - The Unreliable Narrator
What is one of the most outlandish missions in Battlefield 1's campaign mode, it also one of the most enjoyable. 'Friends in High Places' sees you take on the role of pilot con man, Clyde Blackburn. After failing to win the plane of a fellow pilot, Blackburn ties him to a chair and steals it anyway, assuming his identity.
He teams up with gunner, Wilson, and a training mission turned German invasion sees the pair face increasingly dangerous and more extraordinary missions, from taking down the "Kaiser's finest" to single-handedly winning the Battle of Britain.
Yet, as the story comes to a close, the niggling voice in our mind that sighs, "oh, this just isn't realistic" is justified. Blackburn admits that this is the telling of his story and that there have been multiple versions, some more true than others. He insists that his version of events is true, but then looks at the camera saying, "What you heard from me is the truth. I wouldn't tell you if it wasn't... would I?"
This fourth wall smash is further foreshadowed by Blackburn's propensity to gamble and lie throughout the campaign, leaving us all fooled as his final message all but confirms that this 'true story' we were told we were reliving was one big, dog-fighting, old wives' tale.
