10 GENIUS Video Game Features No One Saw Coming

5. Blitzball - Final Fantasy X

FINAL FANTASY 10 blitzball
Square Enix

Prior to Final Fantasy X, the series had brought fans a number of fantastic minigames to while away the hours with. Final Fantasy VIII’s Triple Triad card game is still beloved among franchise afficionados. The tenth entry in the main series, however, featured something entirely unprecedented.

Tidus and Wakka’s love for the watery sport of Blitzball is well documented, but it’s not just a plot device. The main story features a match or two that has to be played, but outside of that, Blitzball is an entire minigame in and of itself.

Players are able to convince certain NPCs to join their team, delve into a surprising range of tactics and play out a lot of optional but super fun matches.

The best part is how cleverly implemented Blitzball is. Those who don’t really take to it aren’t forced to play much at all, while those who do can indulge for hours on end.
