2. Trick Weapons - Bloodborne
There’s no
denying that Bloodborne is Dark Souls’ spiritual successor. That familiar
unsettling atmosphere and brutally difficult gameplay is right at the
forefront.
At the same time, though, many Dark Souls players were surely thrown off their stride by certain mechanics. Combat in Bloodborne is much more aggressive and dodge-oriented, with shields only really included as a bit of a joke. The Rally mechanic also encourages dashing in and counter attacking to regain HP.
The biggest difference combat-wise, however, is the weapons themselves. Hunters wield Trick Weapons and firearms, the former being able to ‘transform’ in a way unique to each weapon with a tap of the L1 button. Sometimes this only alters the moveset a little or adds an elemental effect, but in other cases it entirely changes the way a weapon functions.
It’s a fascinating, steampunk-ish concept that makes the game’s (relatively) limited number of weapons feel utterly distinct and endlessly entertaining to cause carnage with.
