10 GENIUS Video Game Features No One Saw Coming
1. Nook Miles - Animal Crossing: New Horizons
The Animal Crossing franchise has always prided itself on affording fans options. It’s the life sim players enjoy their own way, at their own paces.
From interacting with villagers to collecting items from special events/characters or simply fishing and collecting bugs to fill up your museum, there are so many ways to spend an Animal Crossing session. The trouble was, some of these pastimes just didn’t offer much in terms of actual in-game rewards.
The Nook Miles feature was, in a way, one of the most important additions to Animal Crossing: New Horizons. It keeps track of a huge range of activities the player partakes in (such as the number of fish caught, trees chopped down and Bells spent), then awards Nook Miles when certain milestones are reached.
Essentially, it’s an achievement system, but an incredibly comprehensive one. This really can change the way fans play. More than that, it can keep them playing to hit certain goals once the ‘daily chore’ aspect of the series starts to creep in.
It’s a seemingly insignificant but very important introduction, and those Nook Miles can be exchanged for an array of exclusive items too.
