10 Genius Ways Video Games Got Past The Censors
3. Team Fortress 2

Sometimes, video games don’t have to compromise too much when dealing with censors. Of course, this is entirely dependent on what kind of game we’re referring to. For example, if a game is hell-bent on gore and profanity in a serious nature, it’s quite difficult to find an alternative that the boards will agree with. Whereas a game like Team Fortress 2, which has plenty of references and nods to silliness throughout, can easily get away with a quick-switch of gore that keeps the game’s integrity untouched.
As previously mentioned, Germany weren’t a very easy country to work with in regards to censorship. With that came the change to Team Fortress 2. Valve decided to replace all blood, gore and giblets with random entities. What does that mean, exactly? If you shoot someone, it’s not unlikely you’ll see a cheeseburger, unicycle, spring or clock come flying out of their dead body. This style of silly giblets was made available for other regions but ultimately remains an artifact for how Team Fortress 2 shrugged off the censors, poking fun at itself, Germany and censorship in general.
