10 Genius Ways Video Games Got Past The Censors

4. Wolfenstein: The New Colossus

The newer generation of Wolfenstein titles, The New Order and Colossus are each prime examples of Germany’s denazification going a little bit too far in the grand scheme of things. Fair enough, the Nazi regime’s effects have had a massive impact on the country, there’s no question there. However, the idea that symbols and portrayals of literally massacring Nazis is going to inspire people or even educate them incorrectly is a damn stretch. But that’s not the weirdest part about how MachineGames responded to Germany's censorship.

Sure, they removed swastikas from both versions which arguably neutered the atmosphere of the game. A huge part of the shock factor comes from the fact the Germans won World War 2 and the Nazi culture poisoned the rest of the world. The big change made to The New Colossus, though, is a little bit funnier by comparison. The game features a rather lengthy, quite humorous scene with Adolf Hitler aboard a space station, helping out in auditions for a film he’s producing. Very weird stuff already, however, it goes on. MachineGames’ idea of censoring Hitler's portrayal was to take off his moustache. That's it, they changed his name ever so slightly and shaved his moustache. Genius.
