The filmmakers behind Pitch Black tried SO hard to turn Vin Diesel's breakout feature into the next big thing. Although Pitch Black spawned sequels, video games, novels, tv specials, a comic, and an animated feature, the franchise never really took off.

But there is a diamond in the rough. To capitalise on the release of the second instalment, Chronicles of Riddick, a tie-in game was released called Escape from Butcher Bay, which centres around our titular antihero escaping from a maximum security prison.

Although the movie barely broke even, Escape from Butcher Bay is a different story. The level design is top-notch. The controls are slick. Like Assassin's Creed or Metal Gear Solid, you're given a lot of variety whether you want to dispose of enemies outright or by relying on stealth tactics. Because of Riddick's eyeshine, you can also use the darkness to your advantage.

But Butcher Bay isn't just great - it's revolutionary. At the time of its release, its graphics, lighting, skin textures, and facial animations were on another level. When you look at some of the shots now, you'd swear you were looking at a modern title, not a 20-year-old game.

Although Chronicles of Riddick never became as big as the creators hoped, it indirectly led to the creation of a truly outstanding game.
