2. The Mummy Demastered

Saying the 2017 version of The Mummy was "disappointing" doesn't feel right, considering this remake bombed at the box-office and single-handedly destroyed a potential cinematic universe. So, when the video game adaptation, The Mummy Demastered, was announced, many people had the same thought, "Why bother?"

This skepticism is understandable, considering this Metroidvania title has you playing as a faceless grunt instead of Tom Cruise's character. However, the disconnection with the source material works in Demastered's favour.

This 2D platformer doesn't attempt to connect with the film that inspired it. Instead, it focuses on replicating the gameplay, level structure, and atmospheric music from bullet-hell classics like Contra, Ghosts 'n' Goblins, and Metal Slug.

Because of this, Demastered feels more like a love letter to retro titles, rather than a movie tie-in. That's not an exaggeration. While you're blasting away at giant spiders and dinosaurs (there's dinosaurs by the way), you totally forget it has any association with The Mummy film.

Not only is The Mummy Demastered a delight from beginning to end, it should serve as the blueprint for movie tie-ins. Apart from its brevity, it's pretty much perfect.
