10 Gimmick Bosses In Dark Souls
3. Bed Of Chaos - Dark Souls 1
It has been stated many times before, but it does bear mentioning again: the most infamous boss of the first Dark Souls game is downright unfair. As well as that, it is loaded with strange gimmicks that go against everything we've encountered before.
Firstly, you have a version of the "glowing weak spot" where there are roots on the far left and right sides of the arena that must be destroyed before it can be beaten. Getting to them between the sniping fireball attacks, collapsing floors and sweeping limbs can be a nightmare in and of itself, but mercifully, they do stay destroyed should you die and have to re-fight the boss.
The floor falling away and the attacks that sweep you down to your death can feel more like a platforming or memorisation challenge (alongside sheer luck) rather than the Dark Souls gameplay you've come to expect and the final jump down to the centre of the boss can be easily interrupted or deflected.
The fact that to destroy the boss, you need only swing your weapon at a small and insignificant looking core is cold comfort when you've taken so many unfair deaths. Not well remembered or enjoyed.
