10 Great Horror Games That Are Ugly On Purpose
3. The Fridge Is Red
Despite having a name that makes it sound like a kid's first sentence book, this indie horror title is an exercise in terrifying visuals. You'll be staying up all night in fear after playing it. So, all that can be said is, don't judge a game by its title.
This horror is an anthology experience, telling a slew of first-person-based stories, all focussing on different themes and gameplay elements. Thus far, only the demo is available, but that in itself is a haunting experience that gives you a gruesome dive into hell - quite literally.
The demo's descent into the devil's domain is filled with revolting body horror, shocking moments and buckets full of blood.
Still, that's just the icing on this visually disgusting cake, as the sponge is comprised of PS1-style graphics that make the game feel like a secret hidden gem from the PlayStation era.
It's got all the hallmarks of an ugly horror game, like violence, pierced eyeballs, broken bodies and low fidelity. Plus, the titular fridge is somehow made uncanny and scary, thanks to the deliberately dated graphics. Making a fridge scary? Now, that's an accomplishment.
