10 Great Horror Games That Are Ugly On Purpose
2. Night Of The Living Consumers
On paper, the idea of a horror game set in a good old-fashioned supermarket might seem ridiculous. But, anyone who has ever worked retail can tell you that despite how vulgar, maniacal, and over-the-top this game is, it is painfully realistic.
This game is a horrifying exploration of the woes of a retail worker. In it, you play as an unlucky newbie at your local store. You attempt to stack shelves all while avoiding the onslaught of consumers demanding ridiculous things. Still, if you don't adhere to their whims, you'll get the manager called on you and could end up fired!
As if the game's concept wasn't ugly enough, its visuals truly follow suit. The character models are disgustingly rendered, with creepy designs and camera angles that are way up into your personal space.
Naturally, the graphics are also deliberately retro, giving the whole title this reductive, pixelated and gritty aesthetic. Finally, there's an oppressive use of colour, with a disgustingly florescent lighting scheme that feels just like your local soul-crushing supermarket.
In the developer's own words, "retail is hell". You don't have to say that twice!
