10 Great Video Game Sequels The Fans Rejected
7. Hitman Absolution
Despite being one of the best-selling Hitman games, Hitman Absolution is routinely lampooned by... just about everybody.
Even though it carries the Hitman name, Absolution is probably the furthest from the formula the series has ever strayed.
In an effort to move things to the next generation, Absolution aimed for a much more broad playstyle. Rather than being pretty much forced into stealth, Absolution also allowed trigger-happy action gamers a chance at success.
That sounds like a good thing, but in reality all it did was confuse the true Hitman fans and give them a game that didn't know what it wanted to be.
The huge open-world missions of the past were pretty much gone, with more linear levels in their place.
All of this is a real shame, because Hitman Absolution can be a pretty fantastic game if you play it as smartly as possible. Although it's much more streamlined, there are still glimpses of the real Hitman formula there, and some of the levels are great fun to experiment with.
A lot of Absolution can be found in the later games in the series, so it's certainly not as bad as the fans thought.
