10 Great Video Games That Almost Never Happened At All

9. Devil May Cry

The original Devil May Cry was wonderful: cool, stylish and positively dripping with a gothic ambiance few games can match, which shouldn't be surprising as the game was originally intended to be the fourth instalment of another fan favourite franchise, Resident Evil. It seems hard to believe, considering it doesn't really look, play or feel anything like a survival horror. For a start, see how easy it is to turn around. Damn, that's swish. But then it wouldn't, because series producer Shinji Mikami decided following a trip to the UK where he photographed gothic textures, that it was just too different to fit in with the Resident Evil world, and the initial direction was changed. The call benefited both series in the end, as Resi 4 was eventually released to mass critical acclaim, with many considering it among the best games ever released by Capcom. Devil May Cry also got its own franchise. Despite never quite topping the original action-packed thriller, it remains a fine collection of games in its own right.

I've been writing since I was fourteen and thought it might get girls to like me. It didn't. I should have learned guitar instead.
