10 Great Video Games That Are WAY Too Long
1. Final Fantasy VII Remake + Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Everybody wanted the long-gestating Final Fantasy VII Remake to be bigger than ever, fleshing out every aspect that made its predecessor special.
But rather than recreating the 1997 title in a single game, Square decided to turn Final Fantasy VII into a trilogy. Although players initially assumed the 2020 reboot would serve as a modern recreation of the original, FFVII Remake only retells the first third of the game.
To be fair, some Final Fantasy purists were ecstatic at the prospect of re-experiencing this masterpiece in, not one but three different titles, with tons of added subplots, deeper relationships, and expanded lore.
But at the same time, it was cheeky for Square to ask players to pay triple the price for a reiteration of a PSOne game. What's worse is Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth are brimming with so much extra material, it's painfully obvious the project would've worked fine as one compact game. That way, the main campaign could've been a sizeable 60 hours while still maintaining the emotional beats and tight storytelling of the classic version.
Sadly, greed has cost the studio greatly, since Rebirth only sold half as much Remake, indicating potential customers weren't keen on the iconic game being split apart. Even if Final Fantasy VII's closing chapter gets rave reviews, the whole project is a textbook example of quantity over quality.
