10 Great Video Games Whose Later Levels Are Absolute Torture

1. Bayonetta

Perhaps the greatest aspect of Devil May Cry's legacy is the influence it had on other action games. Bayonetta certainly takes inspiration from Capcom's legendary series (the game's director Hideki Kamiya was responsible for the first Devil May Cry too) but it is a phenomenal title in its own right. Whisper it, but it might even be better than Dante's adventures.

Bayonetta was the first major success of indie developer Platinum Games and they've been releasing quality action games like Vanquish and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance ever since. Bayonetta is still head and shoulders above the rest though, thanks to great core gameplay as well as some awesome stylistic choices (the soundtrack alone deserves to be put in some kind of Hall of Fame).

The story is suitably over-the-top too, leading Bayonetta to take down hulking giants with the sheer strength of her hair. That's nothing compared to the final stages of the game though which sees supporting character Jeanne ride a motorbike up a statue into space before Bayonetta takes on a god named Jubileus. Yes, you read that correct. Even more bizarre, Bayonetta and Jeanne then team up to fly into the Sun and destroy the remaining pieces of said god to prevent it from returning.

Crazy story reasons beside, Bayonetta's fight with Jubileus is an incredibly tough contest. After all, Jubileus is a deity with the power to summon black holes at will to fight with. Conquering this enormous god is an unbelievably satisfying achievement after the various trials and tribulations of the game, and it's the perfect way to end such a bizarre yet refreshing experience. You'll have earned it too; Bayonetta's Game Over screen (which aptly states: €œThe Witch Hunts Are Over€) will make a regular appearance during your time with the game.

Difficulty aside, Bayonetta is one of the great gaming classics of the last generation of consoles and it should be experienced by everyone, if only because it features more god-punching-into-sun action than any other game.

Do you agree with the games on this list or are you such a master at Trials now that the whole game is a breeze? Can you name any of your own experiences with great games that quickly became frustratingly difficult? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.

I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
