10 Great Video Games Whose Later Levels Are Absolute Torture
2. The Trials Series
The core goal of the Trials series is unbelievably simplistic; you need to go from one end of the level to the other, left to right.
On the early levels of the game, that's an equally simplistic task. Like Super Meat Boy, Trials gives you the chance to learn its various gameplay elements by easing you into the game slowly. Like that game too though, it steadily grows more difficult, leading you down a torturous and unforgiving path where the "just one more go" mentality will drive you insane.
The early levels in Trials are almost pleasant; it's fun to get big air to try and best your friends' times on the easy and medium difficulty levels. Even the most average Trials player can earn gold medals on these tracks. Hard difficulty levels are a tougher challenge, but with some practice of the harder gameplay techniques you can still move through them at a decent pace.
It's the extreme tracks that will be your undoing. They require you to master the game's techniques, like bunny hopping, and you'll be using every trick in the book to overcome every obstacle. The most notorious of these are the Inferno levels (Inferno IV from newly released Trials Fusion is arguably the toughest of these); they're designed to be the toughest tracks in the game and RedLynx has succeeded - they're nightmare-inducing.
Still, the series is called Trials for a reason and the extreme tracks are doable with a lot of practice and improvement. Some people have mastered the game so much that they're able to complete these tracks with zero faults; that must seriously require the patience of a saint.
