10 Great Video Games Whose Later Levels Are Absolute Torture

10. F-Zero GX

F-Zero might not be Nintendo's most famous franchise but it is one of its more challenging. Like Mario Kart on an acid trip, F-Zero is all about incredible speed, making quick reactions a necessity to navigate its perilous tracks. Track memorisation is a vital element of the series too; remembering when exactly you'll need to brake and turn can be the difference between success and failure.

F-Zero GX was the first game in the series to introduce a story mode, putting players in the shoes of Captain Falcon, he of the famous €œFalcon PAWNCH€ from the Smash Bros. Series. Sadistically, the game offers three difficulty levels for Story Mode and finishing Very Hard is a true test of your racing abilities.

Interestingly, the final boss of the game is a 'staff ghost' (a time trial recorded by one of the development team) and on Very Hard you need to push the Blue Falcon to its limits to beat your ghostly rival across the line. Of course, this just makes you more likely to go flying off the edge of the world too.

If you possess cat-like reflexes and you're looking to retry the same level over and over again, F-Zero GX has you covered.

I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
