10 Great Video Games Whose Later Levels Are Absolute Torture
9. Call Of Duty: World At War
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare revolutionised the first-person shooter, particularly with its spectacular multiplayer mode, and as an added bonus it also established Call of Duty as the biggest franchise in the gaming world. It dragged a somewhat stale series kicking and screaming into the modern day and it received deserved critical acclaim.
So it's weird that Infinity Ward would follow that brave step forward with another step back, handing the reigns over to other developer Treyarch so they could begin the yearly-release schedule that is now in place. World At War is another shooter set during World War II but thankfully, it played like a new experience with IW 3.0, the new engine created for Call of Duty 4. The multiplayer may have again stolen the plaudits (specifically the Nazi Zombies mode) but World At War's campaign is also highly memorable for being insanely difficult.
Turning the difficulty up to Veteran renders the final missions of the game nearly impossible; finishing them truly deserves a medal of honour in patience. In particular the penultimate mission 'Heart Of The Reich' is an incredible challenge. The final stage of this sees you climbing the steps of the Reichstag with a huge amount of German resistance ahead of you. Grenades and bullets fly in your direction constantly and it becomes a game of luck - ultimately an arduous task but finally finishing the job will mark you as a Call of Duty legend.
