10 Great Video Games Whose Later Levels Are Absolute Torture

8. Gears Of War

Similar to World At War, cranking Gears of War to its maximum difficulty is the best way to experience the game's campaign. Gears of War also allows you to introduce a co-op partner into the mix to make things a bit more interesting. It doesn't really stop the game being frustratingly difficult on Insane difficulty though.

There's an obvious benefit to playing through an Insane run with a partner; you have someone to watch your back and pick you up when you're down. The game's final boss will still prove to be a relentlessly tough challenge though. RAAM might sound like a computer component but don't be fooled; he can decimate Marcus and Dom in seconds.

Beating him co-operatively requires a lot of co-ordination (generally the best strategies involve one player using explosives to remove his Kryll shield whilst the other snipes him in the head repeatedly) and it's a tough but rewarding experience. The following games might have greater emotional high points but finally besting RAAM on Insane is arguably the toughest section in the entire Gears of War series.

I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
