8. Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe

Just as the Wii U is now recognised as a de facto beta test for the Switch, Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe is without question the blueprint for the Injustice series.

Upon release for PS3 and Xbox 360 back in 2008, fans were treated to an original - if a little convoluted - story telling of the merging of the Mortal Kombat and DC Comics universes, heralded by the creation of Dark Kahn (the fusion of Darkseid and Shao Kahn).

The paragons of each realm, led by Raiden and Superman respectively, must band together to repel the forces of evil and save their worlds.

The actual gameplay in this title was refreshing in its variation, with the usual punches, kicks, combos, and fatalities augmented by the introduction of Falling Kombat and Klose Kombat; essentially mid-fight mini games/events which help to break up the standard bouts and aid in stage transitions.

With a roster comprising everyone from Sub-Zero and Scorpion to Green Lantern and The Flash, fans of Mortal Kombat and/or DC Comics are served equally well by the cast of characters available here.

Whilst the Injustice series would ultimately surpass MK Vs DC, it's still a great game in its own right.
