1. Resident Evil Remake
Choosing a number one was hard. Well, not really, as it was
always going to be a Resident Evil game - but choosing which one was the hard part. My first instinct was for it to be Resident Evil 4 as it's not only my favourite Resident Evil game, it's my favourite game full stop... but then I had the realisation that 'Ganados aren't really zombies'. My next instinct was to choose Resident Evil 2 as it is one of the most action packed, and while I still love that game to this day and can complete it with my eyes closed, the absurdity of the Police Station setting really made me think twice. So with that said, the only real choice for number one was the Resident Evil Remake for Gamecube. Released in 2002, this game was, and still is, absolutely stunning - from the textures, character models, and spooky lighting effects, the quality holds up to this day and it has barely aged in the eleven years since its release. Keeping the same basic storyline and setting as the original, but adding extra areas, puzzles and a great side-plot involving a woman who has been horrifically tortured with experiments, the game had just enough new ideas, challenges and quality to entice Resident Evil veterans back to the Arklay Mansion for a second visit. Resident Evil Remake is easily one of the most claustrophobic, scariest, and skin-itchingly-atmospheric videogames I've ever played and remains a triumph as a stand-alone adventure - in fact it makes me sad revisiting this game to realise just how far Resident Evil has strayed off the path with the most recent sequels. This is true survival horror!
