10 Greatest Final Fantasy Villains of All Time

3. Seifer (FFVIII)

Ambition can take a man very far, far enough even, to betray the people you've known, trusted and fought beside your entire life. If Seifer Almassy's journey is about one thing, it's about ambition, and how far a man will go to achieve it. In the end, Seifer walks away with very little save his life and his two lifelong companions who would follow him into hell, Fujin and Raijin. What makes Seifer a compelling character is that any body could be him. How many of us would trade in what we have for what we want? How many of us would turn our backs on the very people who are meant to have ours? Perhaps more than we'd like to admit, there is a bit of Seifer in all of us. He gives in to his dream, but by achieving it he burns all the bridges he ever had and ultimately has very little to show for it. When Edea first encounters Seifer, she very quickly susses him out for exactly what he is: a boy. Seifer manifests the quiet voice in the back of our heads that tells us we're no good. That we're weak, useless and immature. That strength comes through cutting ties, not by nurturing them. His journey is the parallel opposite to Squall's, who learns just how much stronger a person can be through others, rather than chasing the illusions of growth by abandoning those who make you vulnerable. Seifer is the personification of allowing our insecurities to get the better of us, making him one of the most relatable villains in the series, and for that, he more than earns his position on this list.

When not writing Chris spends more time thinking about playing videogames than actually playing them and can usually be found reorganizing his Blu Ray and book collections. He owns four different editions of A Song of Ice and Fire and no, it isn't overkill. He's left the neon haze of Tokyo and Seoul for the more sedate streets of Bournemouth.
