Crysis came along in 2007 and changed the landscape of the FPS game forever. With its mind-blowingly impressive visuals (which crippled many a people's computers) and a superb nanosuit dynamic, it was like nothing we'd ever played, and an achievement that its (admittedly decent) sequels have yet to match. What's really great about this game is the choice it lends the player: if you're attacking an enemy encampment in the jungle, the nanosuit allows you to use four abilities, strength, cloak, armour and speed, to your advantage, though the trade-off is that only one can be used at once, and so you need to think out a plan before you run in and raise hell. In addition to this, the massively wide-open map allows players to choose their own route to any given objective, and to make things a little more interesting, the AI is extremely smart, responding to light noises and basically making your life hell if you're not careful. Still, this just ensures the nanosuit doesn't make things too easy, and to its credit, the game manages to still be a sufficient challenge. Gorgeously rendered and wildly innovative, Crysis is an absolute blast.
