10 Greatest JRPGs Of All Time

6. Mother 3

The magnum opus of the Mother series, Mother 3 is so damn good that westerners are still demanding (in vain) a proper stateside release.

Mother 3 takes place an indeterminate amount of time after the first two games, and features a lovable scamp named Lucas, who goes on an adventure after his life absolutely falls the hell apart.

This situation does not considerably improve as the game goes on. To say any more would be spoiling a game I really, REALLY want you all to play, but rest assured tissues should be on standby because Mother 3 does not hold back.

Mother 3 refines and tightens the trademark rolling counter system the series is most famous for, allowing the player a chance to undo any damage done to them by having the lost health wind down at varying speeds instead of being immediately lost. Enemies are more interesting, the story is the most emotional and intense in the series, and the ending is a gut punch that will stay with you for years to come.
