10 Greatest NES Video Games Of 1985
1. Super Mario Bros.
Did you really expect anything else?
The cartridge that launched a franchise. This game, more than any other on this list, put Nintendo on the map and paved the way for the home gaming universe that still exists over thirty years later. Super Mario Bros created a world that gamers could really get immersed in, unlike so many of its peers that lacked any kind of depth whatsoever.
It wasn't just a platformer than kids would be bored with after a while, it was a quest to be completed and cherished, leaving them hungry for the next in the series.
It caught the imagination of a generation and fans were rabid for more and, in the coming years, they would certainly get it. Mario games would launch each new system, always finding new ways to make players fall in love all over again.
Mario is the most famous video game mascot of all time and with good reason. Super Mario Bros on the NES may feel a little archaic to first time players now, but many of the tropes and hallmarks of his modern games started here.
Would the NES have been a success without it? Probably. Would Nintendo be where they are today? Probably not. With eight worlds and thirty levels, it was an audacious title for a system that was still basically bad ports and shallow sports titles.
Grab a controller and bask in the glory of one of the best NES games of all time.
