10 Greatest Open World Games Of All Time

4. Marvel's Spider-Man

Insomniac

Insomniac didn't need to go as hard as they did with Marvel's Spider-Man, they honestly really didn't. But they did, and thank god for that because the end result was one of the greatest superhero games of all time.

The detail put into this game is frankly obscene. Not quite as much as will be seen in the final three, but the number of tiny worldbuilding details stuffed into Spider-Man's interpretation of New York, stuff that most players would never think about, brings its world to life in a way few games do.

The problem with most open-world games is accounting for the player being a little jerk who will ruin any story you're trying to tell by having the great noble hero go on a killing spree. Well, in Spider-Man, the game goes out of its way to make it impossible for Spidey to kill or harm anyone, having the punch button turn into a high-five when around civilians, and webs sticking crooks you punch off cliffs to walls.

And the swinging, well, we wouldn't even be discussing the game if it screwed that part up, would we? Easy to learn, and satisfying to master, Marvel's Spider-Man earns its place in the top five purely on the web-swinging being the most fun traversal method on this entire list.
