The Witcher trilogy have mostly been radiating in the background of the RPG scene, loved mainly by fans of the books. While in terms of storytelling and worldbuilding they were unmatched, matching that with appealing gameplay was always something CD Projekt RED struggled with.

And then Witcher 3 came along.

The Witcher 3 put the entire series on the map, made CD Projekt RED a force to be reckoned with in the gaming industry, and is still one of the best RPGs ever made, with one of the best open worlds in RPG history to boot.

What makes The Witcher 3's open world so intriguing is its attention to detail with incorporating gameplay into the story. To give just one example, a lot of gamers these days have grown to resent the mini-map, feeling it limits progress and peer pressures the player from exploring. The Witcher 3 not only lets you turn the map off, but will even ensure you won't get lost by having quest givers realistically give directions to the mission objective. If you want to find the objective, you have to listen carefully and pay attention to the road and landscape, as the peasants you will so often take missions from will name landmarks and general areas instead of anything concrete.

That kind of confidence in the player is scattered all over this game. The Witcher 3 not only has a richly detailed open world, but it is also built to ensure that you get absolutely lost in it.
