In a universe clogged up with the likes of Star Wars: Bounty Hunter and Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds, Knights of the Old Republic stands alone as a title which gives fans of the hugely successful sci-fi franchise the feeling that they actually had some freedom to act autonomously in that famous galaxy far, far away. BioWare is a developer which as you would hope will crop up more than once on this list, and this was their first title which foregrounded the importance of decision making alongside the impact it could have on the universe around you. Clearly interactive storytelling has become a device of massive importance in the RPG genre and so the influence of KOTOR cannot be understated. As well as the gripping narrative, BioWare created a plethora of gorgeous worlds in-keeping with the vitally important Star-Wars lore which would play host to some of the coolest lightsaber battles in gaming history - all based on the intricate (and ancient in its own right) d20 dice-rolling combat system.
