Of the many stunning, detailed and compelling worlds featured on this list, Fallout 3s is by far the closest to real life. This sprawling first person RPG takes place in a Washington D.C. savaged by the effects of a brutal nuclear war where but a fraction have survived the attacks. Thrust into this bleak landscape, you are tasked with the none-too-easy task of surviving while being hampered by the vile mutants which have plagued the uninhabited areas of the city. During this survival you must complete quests, level up and do the general tasks which make RPGs so much fun. Though there is a large number of traditionalists who favour the Black Isle-developed predecessors to Fallout 3, there can be no denying that to the vast majority of gamers the compelling blend of shooting and satisfyingly deep RPG elements which make up the third instalment in the series provide the more enjoyable, accessible gaming experience. With a plethora of rumours surrounding whether or not Bethesda will be re-entering the Fallout universe with a fourth title based in Boston, the only thing we know for a fact is that the bar was set incredibly high by part three.
