10 Greatest Video Game Voice Actors

4. James McCaffrey (Max Payne)

James McCaffrey might not have the same level of range as DiMaggio, but we'll be damned if his performances in the Max Payne games alone don't cement him as one of the greatest and most iconic voice actors of all time. The Max Payne video games came about in a time in which the action genre was pretty stagnant creatively, and managed to imbue it with an unexpected level of maturity, while also delivering ultra-violent thrills thanks to its outstanding bullet time mechanic. The film's noir-inspired narrative, the artfully dark comic book presentation, and the chilling score all contributed to making this a thinking man's shooter, but it's McCaffrey's stellar turn as the titular character that really hammered this cinematic game's punch home.

There's never a second throughout Max Payne that we doubt his anguish or his pain at the death of his family, because McCaffrey's distinctive voice and subtly rattled performance doesn't waver for even a nano-second. It's a perfect marriage of intelligent, creative minds crafting an ambitious project and a voice actor with absolute confidence in what he is doing; the results, of course, speak for themselves.
