10 Greatest Video Game Voice Performances Of All-Time

9. John Marston - Red Dead Redemption - Voiced By Rob Wiethoff

If there's a serious challenge in building a vocal personality for a dusty, hard living gunslinger, it's to do so without coming off as a second rate Clint Eastwood. There's a cowboy stereotype that you're almost compelled to adhere to in a role like this, the swagger, the timing, that wild west drawl, and it takes a talented performer to pull it off without leaning toward parody. We tip our collective hat then to Rob Wiethoff, the voice behind Red Dead Redemption's John Marston - undoubtedly the most authentically realised cowboy character in gaming history. Wiethoff's performance as the weather-worn, somewhat damaged Marston was a masterstroke of voice acting, expertly capturing the essence of the downcast hero with a shattered past and a good heart. Page upon page of remarkable script, delivered in tones reeking of resentment and melancholy, even traces of humour were seamlessly woven into Marston's personality, never jarring the audience out of the illusion that they are living through a riveting western drama.
