5. Team Fortress 2
Free to play done right. How hard can it be for developers to make a free to play game but do it right? Quite difficult if nobody has cottoned on to the idea of just imitating the model Valve used for Team Fortress 2. Everything in the game is accessible, but you can pay money to get it a littler sooner than you would if you just played the game. Despite this, it's still not a play to win model like some games use. Team Fortress 2 is a game that you can't really say you haven't played at this point in time. Practically any PC can run the game, and it's free on Steam, but what makes it really attractive is that it's just a game that you can pick up and play whenever. A shooter that, despite it's age, still sets itself apart from the current trend of shooters. It's not a grey brown contextual mess where every kill is greeted with the words "f***ing FAMAS", and the fan base isn't only made up of twelve year olds who spout the word "f*****" like a homophobic fire hose. It's a game where a one-eyed black Scotsman can run around with a Claymore Great Sword and still maintain a positive kill death ratio. If that doesn't sound awesome to you, then you need to have your head examined. Free to play, a system which doesn't reward people who pay for equipment and just overall fun. Team Fortress 2 can easily be recognised as one of the greatest shooters of this generation.
