10 Guilty Pleasure Video Games We All Played More Than Any Blockbuster

6. Turok

2007 saw a wave of blockbuster FPS games released, with Halo 3, Bioshock and Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare all unleashed that year. Coming out in early 2008, Turok had the odds stacked against it from the start - it had some seriously tough acts to follow, the market was seriously over-saturated with FPS games and it had the unenviable task of trying to successfully reboot a franchise that had fallen out of mainstream favour. Despite these obstacles, developer Propaganda came up with a game that provides a hugely enjoyable experience in a big, dumb Hollywood sort of way. The sweeping orchestral score, intense sound effects and impressive voice talents (including Timothy Olyphant, Ron Perlman and Donnie Wahlberg) all contributed to that. But the real draw to the game as always is the dinosaurs, and Turok doesn't disappoint in this respect, making them genuinely terrifying with some fantastic AI, from early encounters with raptors in long grass (slitting a rabid raptor's throat is really quite satisfying) to epic set-pieces with the big T-Rex. Sadly the AI of human enemies isn't up to this standard, and the gunfights with them are more generic fare. As a reboot, Turok ultimately failed - the planned sequel was scrapped and it doesn't look like the franchise is making another comeback any time soon. But this is a game of the last generation that deserves another look.
