Theres a good reason Nintendo misplaced these stages - Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels laid waste to your 1UP counter like no other entry in the series. Any stage from the Japanese version of Super Mario Bros 2 is a contender for this list, but theres a special place in gaming hell reserved for bonus level World C-3. So, what made this one so tough? Well, it was comprised of nothing but giant pitfalls that could only be crossed by hopping onto those temperamental springboards. You were under heavy Lakitu bombardment throughout, and we havent even gotten to the worst part yet. Strong gusts of wind started up without warning, throwing you off course or hurling you to instant death. This level made a mockery of the term bonus stage.
