10 Hated Video Game Mechanics The World Was Wrong About

8. Naval Combat - Assassin's Creed 3/Black Flag

There is nothing remotely assassin-like about two forces blowing seven shades of ship out of each other. Stealth is so far removed from the equation when you're worried about the whole "sink or be sunk" battle going on.

But by the time it was introduced in Assassins Creed 3, I don't think anybody cared anymore.

By this time, way before Origins, people were starting to catch on to the formulaic nature of the Creed games. The series was getting stale, less about actual assassinations like the first game introduced, instead descending into more garish nonsense instead.

So when naval combat was announced, it was greeted with hesitant approval, for fans were willing to try anything to bring some joy back to the series. Yet while it was a bit touch and go in Creed 3, it was popular enough to become the main feature of the next entry, Black Flag.

Hell, you weren't even a proper assassin in that one. You could argue that it lost the integrity of the series (and people did), but for a game not about pirates, it was a cracking pirate game.
