10 Hated Video Game Mechanics The World Was Wrong About

6. Levelling Up Through Collectibles - Crackdown

Death stranding
Microsoft

The first Crackdown had a genius way of leveling up in its games, from its first release up to the long... awaited(?) third one. Instead of focusing all points in one generic pool to disseminate from, it had a different level for each one.

Want to improve your skill with guns? Shoot more things. Feel lacking in the lifting department? Punch more enemies upside the head. Agency cars looking a bit thin? Slide 'round those corners a bit more, if you catch my drift.

But the best and most fitting skill is your agility, which can only be leveled up by collecting green orbs. How do you get these? You jump and climb your way to them, natch. But if they're too far or too high, there's your incentive to come back to later on, when you've scaled some smaller stuff and beefed up a bit.

It turned the notion of fetch questing on its head, by making exploration and collectible gathering a fun task again, unlike those damn feathers from Assassin's Creed II.
