10 Hated Video Game Mechanics The World Was Wrong About

5. Avoiding Enemies - Metal Gear

It might seem weird saying this in 2019, but stealth wasn't a big deal in the 80's. Whereas now we have the Splinter Cell's, Thief's and Deus Ex's of the world, all credit goes to the series we all now know for being stealthy, Metal Gear.

At the time, games were all action based, "keep that trigger down until they're all dead" kind of games, which appealed to the masses for the most part. But when the then relatively unknown Hideo Kojima introduced the concept of not killing everyone in sight, gamers initially balked at the idea.

And whilst the first few Metal Gears passed by with relative success until Solid in 1998, it was down to Kojima's perseverance on this gameplay mechanic that shaped a lot of how we play stealth games today.

It's now so typical of Kojima to go against the grain (looking at you, Death Stranding), but it went on to prove that while it may seem like a wacky notion, it isn't always a bad thing.
